Yesterday I drove around my area signing my newly released books and emblazoning each cover with an "Autographed by Author" sticker. I hit a couple of Borders, B&N, Waldenbooks and even Walmart. In a Drive-by, nothing is arranged ahead of time, so you just go in, introduce yourself to the bookseller in charge, and offer to sign stock. It's a great way to sell books actually, because the booksellers will tend to make sure your cover is facing out on the shelf, or will even put you on a front table if you're not there already, and those shiny little stickers really draw attention. Sometimes, at a real book signing, readers can feel a little intimidated to approach an author sitting at a table with her books piled in front of her, as if stopping by commits them to buying a even if it turns out to be something they're not interested in. So they avoid the situation altogether. With a Drive-by, readers are free to inspect the book on their own, and hopefully will be intrigued enough by what they see and the fact that it's signed to buy the book. It's a no pressure, win-win situation for all concerned! And it was fun talking to the booksellers. Some were really excited to meet me and learn that I live locally.
